Analysts say that next-gen Qualcomm chips will compete with Apple’s and should increase the PC experience. Dr. James Thompson, Qualcomm’s chief technology officer, talked about how the company was making breakthroughs in chip design at their investor day event.
Next-Gen Qualcomm CPU
Qualcomm’s next-generation CPUs will be designed by the Nuvia team and they will be compatible with ARM. Nuvia was purchased by Qualcomm earlier this year for the price of $1.4 billion. Nuvia was founded by 3 former Apple employees, who worked on the A-series chip. Apple’s A-series chip powers the iPad, iPhone, and iPods.
Planning for the release of Qualcomm’s new chip begins in 2022 when manufacturers are given sample chips. Final products are expected one year later in 2023. The company also promises upscaled Adreno GPUs to deliver desktop-class gaming performance and they say that this will provide “sustained performance and battery life”.
The Next-Gen Qualcomm CPU Will Compete With Apple M Series Chips
However, Qualcomm’s promise to deliver a “new M series competitive solution for the PC” stands out from the entire presentation. The new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips are more powerful than ever. This is achieved through refinement of certain components, performance optimizations, and the integration of thermal design to keep things cool.
A lot of manufacturers are now working with Windows laptops, but Intel, Qualcomm, and so on have to improve performance & power efficiency. Qualcomm is already in the PC market and we’ll have to see what they can do to compete with Apple’s new M-series chips.
The company makes one of the world’s most popular smartphone processors. Most of the Android phone industry uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon CPUs. However, this recent move by Apple to develop their own silicon has been a strong motivational factor for other companies to also adopt a similar approach.
Apple is the only company making their own chips for this feature. Samsung and Google are relying on other companies to produce those chips. The announcement of the Qualcomm CPU for Windows devices is great news. It’ll provide increased competition to Intel, which will result in more innovative machines which are both powerful and affordable.
Pat Gelsinger, Intel’s CEO, wants to win back Apple’s business in an interview with Axios. We can also use it to indicate that Intel might be working with Apple’s M-series competitors
